How is an earwax plug formed?

Earwax, or cerumen, is produced by the ceruminous glands in the ear canal. It usually moves from the ear canal to the ear opening, where it dries up and falls out on its own or is washed away during activities like showering. However, sometimes the wax can build up and form a plug.

Factors that can contribute to the formation of an earwax plug include:
Overproduction of Wax: Some people naturally produce more earwax than others.
Inadequate Ear Canal Cleaning: Using cotton swabs or other objects to clean the ears can push the wax deeper into the ear canal, causing a blockage.
Narrow or Curved Ear Canals: Some individuals have ear canals that are more prone to blockages due to their shape.
Age: As people age, the consistency of their earwax may change, becoming drier and harder, making it more likely to form a plug.
It's important not to insert objects into the ear canal to try and remove the wax, as this can push it further in and potentially damage the ear. If you're experiencing symptoms of an earwax blockage, it's best to consult a healthcare professional for safe and effective removal.
